Brigadier : The Church of the Community

Joe waited for the girls to leave before speaking to Craig. “The girls come in every night, buddy?” “Yup, every night they’ll be here and they all know me. I gotta 10% discount for everything they ask for. The café’s too quiet without ‘em”, came the reply from Craig. Joe immediately asked, “Do you think we can host a birthday party for Agnes tomorrow? I’ll pay for all of it”. “That’s great! I’ll make the cake and we’ll put up a poster for everybody in the streets, whoever they are to come in ‘n party then!” Craig exclaimed.

Tomorrow night came and the café was full. The girls, the late night street walkers, the homeless, and just about everybody who saw the big orange poster in front of Craig’s café that said, “Free Food! Birthday Party at 3:30am tonight! All invited!”

Agnes came in as usual at 3:30am and everybody sang her the “stupid” birthday song. Then Craig with the best hospitality he has ever shown, pushed the large cake on a trolley with all 39 candles on it towards Agnes.

Agnes was stunned. She broke down and cried, cried so hard her friends had to hold her up. Cried so long the guests just stood there looking at her. Agnes has never had a birthday party all her life. She was flooded with emotions, emotions she never expected in her. She thought she had lost all her feelings. But this was a turnaround. She felt love.

“Cut the cake! Cut the cake!” everybody shouted. Regaining her composure with tear-filled eye bags, she asked if she could bring the cake home, keep it a few days and just admire the wonderful gift. All were speechless. They agreed and let Agnes go her way. She left with the cake and the rest ate up all the food prepared for the party. Well, the party never happened.
