About the Founder, Sir William Alexander Smith

Sir William Alexander Smith,
Founder of The Boys' Brigade
Sir William Alexander Smith was born on the 27th October, 1854 in the northern Scottish town of Thurso. He was, from his early years, actively involved in Church activities and at the same time served in the ranks of the 1st Lanark Rifles where he received the Queen's Commission. It was when he taught in Sunday School that he was introduced to boys who were high spirited and out of control. Juvenile delinquency, loafing and hooliganism is not a recent phenomenon.

However, with the introduction of drill, discipline and the military aspect of the Boys' Brigade (band, camping, uniform, rank etc.) he turned an unruly group of boys into a disciplined cohesive group. The first BB meeting was held on 4th October 1883, at the North Woodside Hall in Glasgow. The B.B. is the first uniformed organization in the world for youths and many other such organizations can trace their roots to William Smith.
