Brigadier : The Church of the Community

Agnes was a prostitute down the streets of Bologna, West Cognac. Didn’t really know why she was in this sinful trade for the past 10 years, maybe she just had to make a living. A day in the life of Agnes was full of snares and jeers by street walkers and a whole bunch of dirty men or women paying her to do something in return. The customer is always right, so she has got to do whatever they ask her for.

Yes, she has some “friends”. She is not alone in the business. The whole city is full of them and they all know each other. Craig Robinson owns a 24-hour café down the street and every morning at 3:30am the girls would be there, having some drinks for half an hour and then ply on with their trade. At about 7:00am they would call it day in the working life of a prostitute.

Agnes will be 39 years old on July 24 and the day was July 23. In the middle of their usual routine in Craig’s café, Agnes brought the attention of all the girls said, “Well, tomorrow’s my 39th birthday. Nothing much to shout about, but it just crossed my mind today”. Sneering, sarcastically making fun of Agnes in their usual sissy sassy voice, one of them said, “So what? You wanna get a birthday cake and have all of us sing the stupid birthday song for you ‘morrow? Ain’t worth d’money! I’d rather get some booze, my dear!” They all broke out in laughter. Then came the reply, “Well, I’d never had a birthday cake or a celebration all my life. Doesn’t matter anyway. It just crossed my mind, that’s all”.

That was just one small part of their laughter, sarcasm and silly talk for that morning at 3:30am till 4:00. That little moment struck Joe James who was sitting alone and overheard the conversation in the café that time.
