Brigadier : News from Oklahoma State University USA

Time flies. And it flies faster than you can ever imagine. It felt like last week I was applying for my student visa at the embassy and sourcing through airline companies for a flight to bring me here, the land of dreams.

That “last week” was 2 months ago, when I had no idea what it would be like today in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

I knew very little about the United States prior to my arrival here. I know it’s a country on the side of the world, in a different time zone about 12 to 14 hours from home. I am enrolled in university and will be sitting through numerous courses before my Bachelor’s degree is awarded in approximately 2 years. That about all I knew of what’s in store for me.

A long journey awaited me, 35 hours to be spent on the plane and waiting in transit stations namely Singapore, Japan, San Francisco, Denver and finally Oklahoma City which is still 120km away from the university being the nearest airport. I had the luxury of my brother fetching me and helping me settle down for my first 2 days.

It took me a long time to realize I’m so far from home. Trust me, the feeling is not good at all; some people would call it “home-sick”. In the past when I saw Americans, they are the foreigners. I am the foreigner now and it was not easy to put it in me. I am the “kwai lo” as we call it. Not surprisingly, there were many times I would jump at a chance to catch the next flight heading home.
