Brigadier : KUL Games 2003 – Playing Hosts?

This is our sin… and it is about time we changed it.

Don’t get me wrong. There is no harm in the desire to win. That same desire has brought the Company where we are today – at the brink of reaching the big five-o. But over the years this desire and drive has turned into an obsession, a snobbish determination to sweep away whoever stands in our way.

That is not the spirit of 1st KL… and I hope it has never been. Winning is fun and no one likes to lose. Show me a happy loser and I will show you a loser. But we must all know when we CAN win and when we really can’t. My old officers who grew up in the 70’s might tell me that losing was not an option back then but with all due respects, grow up.

This year, we are the hosts of the 2003 KUL Games, a festival of sports running in a two-day camp involving all from the Wilayah Persekutuan state and a few friends from the Girls’ Brigade. Let us aim to be gracious, friendly, accommodating hosts, ever-willing to make our friends feel at home.

Let us not be obsessed with ‘beating’ everyone that we forget the world of the Boys’ Brigade does not revolve around the grounds of our Company alone. We are a worldwide organization but yet we do not know neighbours in our own town.

So friends, whatever it is that you are doing as a 1st KL member come KUL Games 2003, let us put the desire of being first, second. Let’s put past glories in the past and just aim to do the best we can. In the end, the best Company will win.
Lt. Timothy Chan has won quite a few trophies in his time as a Boy but now, he wishes the people around him would stop going on about how “1st KL was always first”. He doesn’t really care.
