Brigadier : People Down The Streets...

All this made me think: I am amazed at how much integrity and honor the 68-year-old man puts into his family business. A simple Chinese coffee shop, that is. I began to think about other people similar to him and how our society takes them for granted all the time. Sometimes, it’s already in our subconscious mind to do so. These are the people who almost never make it into the newspapers because there’s just nothing about them for journalists to write about. They have no social standing, no higher qualification in education, and most don’t even have the school-leaving certificates that we keep safely framed. They don’t have achievements or much wealth to boast about. So what is there to appreciate about them now? What is there to even talk about?

But, have you seen how much commitment, integrity, honor, love and respect they put into what they do for a meager salary – perhaps enough only for a simple life?

It’s time for us to reflect upon our selfish selves and realize how much these people have contributed to our lives without asking for more. The ‘auntie’ who sweeps the street every morning, the guy who delivers the newspapers we read each day, the local canteen worker who makes sure you have a nice meal every time you hurry through your lunch, the hawkers in the daily markets who prepare all you need to cook and eat for the day, the guys who pick up your garbage in the evenings and even the security guard who keeps watch every night. We never know their names. We don’t bother to ask them how they are. We don’t spend time talking with them, but just hurry through our lives each day making sure we have enough for ourselves.

If that is how we live our lives, we will never know how much they have done in making our society a nice place to live in.
