Articles: Brigade Council Meeting at Miri, Sarawak

Picture taken during BCM
It was with mixed feelings that my officers and I decided to attend the Brigade Council Meeting (BCM) in East Malaysia. On the one hand, we had to take a flight from KLIA, this exposing ourselves to the possible dangers of the SARS virus. On the other hand, we were looking forword to visiting the 3rd largest town in Sarawak, Miri.

This year the BCM was held at Grand Palace Hotel, Miri from 25-27 April 2003. After the lengthy meetings, Mr Yee, the deputy Captain and myself had a great time exploring the bustling Miri’s nightlife. It was just in time for us to watch Liverpool trashed West Bromwich Albion 6-0 while enjoying our fish & chips in one of the bistro.

Miri is the jumping-off point for many of Sarawak’s excellent national parks, and 16 officers including the National President, Mr Michael Moorthy, took the opportunity to visit the world’s largest cave system, Mulu Caves, one morning. The journey took 40 minutes by air and it was an exciting one, as one can imagine the type of plane used to fly us there. (It was a 19-seater Twin Otter aircraft).

On arrival we were then transported to the exotic Royal Mulu Resort. After changing to our expedition gear, we wasted no time in starting on our trail. 2 show caves were selected on the first day, Deer Cave and Lang’s Cave.
